| [billing] Rate Increase
Am I the only one that had a rate increase this month from $29.99 to $35.99? Just a paragraph on last bill, no letter or other notice.

| Same thing on my bill. Called billing rep was told there was a billing increase. Told her I was a previous Verizon customer and I thought rates had been grandfathered. They are checking, said she would call me back.
This is the first I've heard about a rate increase. Nothing about rate change on either myfairpoint.net or fairpoint.com. I checked the Nashua Telegraph, they have been following FairPoint pretty closely. Nothing posted there.

| Look at last month's bill and see if you had a paragraph on page 1 talking about rate increase. I am thinking of calling PUC here in Maine and see what they have to say. Maybe they don't have to follow the rules like everyone else and mail notices separately. What about those that have autopay?

| Just checked last month's bill and noticed the rate increase notification. Missed it, I just verify the charges are correct month-to-month, don't read all the verbiage.
DSL is unregulated so not sure what if any say State PUC has about rate. That being said DSL was one of the conditions of the sale and as far as I know FairPoint has not met those goals.
Let us know what the Maine PUC says.

| Well to their credit and much to my surprise FairPoint rep actually called back. Bottom line I am out of luck on the price.
The only Silver lining is with the price for the 1500/384 and 3000/768 plan at $36 a month 7 Mbps is only $4 more a month. Unfortunately I'm probably too far. Fought for years to get upgraded from 1500 to 3000. In researching this noticed they have a new high speed plan, 15 Mbps. I'd probably have to live at the CO to get that speed, unless there are doing pair-bonding. AT&T U-Verse is supposed to be doing pair-bonding but from news reports it seem mostly vaporware.

| reply to mattmill I noticed my rate increase, missed it on previous bill. Called and wanted 29.99 back, no dice. Told her I had other options where I live, still no dice. I called yesterday to cancel DSL and they wanted to work something out, I said too late. Roadrunner 10m for 29.95 one year, DSL was working poorly anyways so I love the speed. |

| To be fair the $29.95 price has been around for years(at least 6+) that I can remember back.. Had Verizon back then. So seeing the increase I decided to call to drop my long distance as I never use it to even shrink my bill a bit. Call was answered quickly and woman was pleasant. I was waiting for my call to become another Fairpoint horror story but it never happend. She mentioned that I could get the speed increase(over existing copper) for $4 more. OK my 3M speed never exceeded 1.5M down via the ususal tests. I decided OK go for it. Well the next day I was flying at 6+M download. Uploading not really great but 2x what I had. So in the long run I increased my bill by ~$3 but the speed increase was worth it. FYI: I am in Burlington, Vt |

She mentioned that I could get the speed increase(over existing copper) for $4 more. That is the one upside of the rate increase, the 7.1 Mbps plan is only $4 more then the 3Mbps plan.
I'd love to take advantage if it but I'm too far, fought for years to be upgraded from 1.5 to 3 Mbps.

@rr.com | reply to FredP So with the rate increase and the 7.1 fee you are then paying $38.99 for 7.1.
I had wicked congestion at times at my location. |

you are then paying $38.99 for 7.1. Here in NH the "up to 7 Mbps" is $39.99 vs $35.99 for up to 3.

@rr.com | I don't think they have caught up to me yet, my Fairpoint email still works. I check online and my account is closed.
$39.99 is close to RR 10 mps at $44.99 regular, my first test with the tech was 22 mps. |

2 edits | reply to mattmill Like the first poster said, I had no idea the 20% rate increase was coming until I went to pay my bill. The reason my $29.95 rate didn't change was it was a lifetime rate from Verizon, so legacy DSL customers from Verizon likely received the $29.95 rate unless they upgraded to 7 Mbps. I also like the suggestion of dropping long-distance. |
