You don't say

This "merger" only made sense to Wall Street cowboys. You know, the same crowd who thought leveraging each dollar to borrow thirty against it was a great idea!

Anyone with half a brain would have told you that 1. it didn't make a lick of technical sense and 2. it was never going to happen.

Also note the part where the T-Mo dude says Europe has 50-70 providers for 350 million people and we have, essentially, 4 for 300 million. Our particular brand of capitalism is killing A. Capitalism B. This Country C. Competition D. All of the above. It's about time we break up these monopolies we've allowed in every industry because it's hurting America.

Very true and it's something, I think, worth being concerned about. Before we make too much of this stat, though, it's worth considering what it actually means. How many choices does the average European household actually have? I doubt all 50+ of these operators are available in all Eurozone countries.

Anyone have any solid data on how many major providers an average household in different European countries have access to? It might only be 4 or 5, much like here (don't forget USA's #5, US Cellular, whose coverage is limited but often strong where others are weak, as in WV).

Don't break 'em up. Just make sure they have to be dumb pipes. When you've got 80+ million customers there are some economies of scale there.

Golden, CO - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, CricKet
Fredericksburg, TX - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, CricKet, Pocket Communications, Five Star Wireless (local)
Fort Pierce, FL - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, US Cellular

Of the above non-big-four carriers, two are CDMA (CricKet, Pocket), one is GSM with a CDMA roamer network (Five Star).

A local telephone cooperative in the Fredericksburg area also intends to do something with the 1700MHz spectrum they have. What exactly, they're not sure yet.

I'm thinking that most folks have at least five cellular providers to choose from. Usually the big four plus either CricKet or MetroPCS in urban/suburban areas or a local/regional carrier in rural areas.

The thing is, CricKet (and maybe MetroPCS) run their networks so differently than the top-tier carriers that they aren't good acquisition targets except for each other. There are a double handful of small unlimited carriers out there that CricKet or MetroPCS might eventually buy up, but not if those carriers are GSM. The big four might go ahead and buy a local carrier or two, but probably not. At this point Sprint could buy US Cellular since the company finally has n EvDO Rev. A network, but that's rather unlikely...

Europe is a continent made up of a bunch of countries. The US is just one country. Why do the 300/350 million numbers make it an automatic apples -> apples comparison?
