Though only if you're a 'most valuable' customer

We've consistently complained that carriers have done a good job leeching all of the value out of femtocells by charging too much for the units themselves, and employing pricing models that eat user minutes. All of this despite the fact the femtocells do as much for the carrier as they do for the consumer; easing local tower congestion for carriers by using the consumer's residential bandwidth line. Perhaps realizing their Microcell service could use a little help (considering the early launch headaches) AT&T's now giving the unit away to some customers deemed "most valuable" -- though it's not clear what you need to do to be considered such.

Easing their tower load...

My bets are on the people getting them are on overloaded towers.

Re: Easing their tower load...

What i have always found to make you a most valuable customer is just leaving contract and calling to cancel.

I don't know if it is that.

I received the offer despite having wonderful coverage, newly upgraded site now serving roaring 3G speeds and little problems with service. And I live in the boonies.

I haven't been able to find the fine print of the offer though, so I think this is a crazy way to surreptitiously renew your contract for another two years with a $375 ETF. Which is even more crazy considering the retail price of the thing is $150.

Given the regions that have been upgraded, I think AT&T took a look at call patterns to other cell companies and figured out which areas were vulnerable to churn caused by defections to Verizon. They're realizing that they need to step up the game, and doing everything in their power to improve service and as a hedge, lock their customers into contracts.

I threw the letter in the trash. It's locked to my account. Thanks, but no thanks.

Just like with Sprint, they will mostly give these free to users with poor inhouse coverage that pay for voice/data plans that make AT&T a nice profit. While the original letter tipping off this policy appears to be unsolicited by the customer, I suspect that GOOD customers who complain about inhouse coverage will be the 1st to get free femtocells. At least that is how it worked for me with Sprint.

Yep - take that load off the tower, and put it on the Internet connection of the sucker who gets this.

Congratulations - you're now paying for improving your neighbours coverage.

too late for me

Despite 4 phones on a family plan for almost 10 years, ATT refused to comp me with a microcell (my home and surrounding area is a dead zone). I tried several times and threatened to cancel. This last time, I actually did cancel. I have Verizon now, which is only marginally better reception-wise, but ATT attitude pushed me over the edge. I'm sure Verizon will push my buttons eventually too.

Too Slow

Sprint has been giving them free for a while now. As long as you call and argue about it.

Free 3G microcell

I received a letter in the mail Saturday. My area is still on edge and we have 8 lines with 5 iPhones. I have 5 bars in my house but during the afternoon the tower would get congested since we live in a rural area with only one tower. So I did use the mark the spot app to report the problems several times on each line. Other than that no complaining. And there are no strings to the offer. You get the microcell free. And it works great. Hope this helps answer some of your questions

Annoyed

After seeing the screenshots of the letters, I actually think I received one and then promptly tore it up because I thought it was just an advertisement, it didn't occur to me it would be free.
I drop calls all of the time in my house, and I've been checking into microcells from time to time but really didn't want to pay for one.

I guess now

Thank you for being with ATT

To do our over demanding use on our towers, feel free to pick up one of your mini towers free of charge so you QUIT using our service and use your own service.

Our people and our shareholders do not care about you, or our service problems, they only want money.

We thank you for your time, and please give us more money we are broke along with our network.

Re: I guess now

Yea, because after all, the call never does use any of AT&T's network after it leaves your connection. It just magically gets routed to the other client.

Got the letter today

Seems strange, I have decent service where I live, yet I received the letter today. I do not know if I am going to use it yet as I want to know if my contract will be extended which the letter does not indicate. It is also not valid until July 15th and only "while supply's last" which means they will only have a few to give out just to get people into the stores.

Mark the Spot

I just received my offer in the mail today. I have subpar reception at my home.
I'm just wondering, how many that have received this offer have used the "Mark the Spot" app on their iPhone? I've used it many times.

I already bought one about 2 months ago

Yea, I shelled out the $150 so that my iPhone could get reception in my home. When you think about it, I paid $150 to get what I'm supposed to be getting by paying my monthly fee for the service.....Aren't I actually paying them twice?

If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. If you don't need one, just give me 5 minutes with your computer, and you will.
