New button on every remote: "Not interested" ... after the first few seconds (5? 10?) of every commercial, you can hit the "Not interested" button to skip the rest of the commercial. (Maybe even set an auto-skip for certain commercials that keep repeating and repeating and...)

The current 50% louder just isn't doing the trick.

Could you please reword that in English, I cannot get anything out of this. It reads ok to me. The problem you are having is that there is no punctuation and you must insert it yourself as you read it. Here it is with the needed punctuation and capitalization - [...] are inserted words to make it flow better:
I can see it now! Lawsuits [will] fly because say I owe someone a little money. All I will see [then] is debt ads [about] n[h]ow to get out of debt?

Not only that, but..... Could lead to crimes, hate crimes, sex crimes etc if the database was leaked.
Dangerous.

| Re: Creepy. It's occurred to me that the bi-directional nature of a cable or FiOS subscriber's connection to TV service is a big chink in privacy.
Think about it. Your TV provider can know what channel you've tuned to. What programs you've recorded. Not to mention any VOD or pay-per-view programming you've selected.
In "Minority Report" Tom Cruise is walking through a mall and advertising screens recognize him as he walks by. They address him by name and push ads geared toward him.
We may not be too far from that being science reality rather than science fiction.

Knowing my name gender etc goes over the line, and i don't want it.

1 edit | Re: Creepy. The problem is your provider being able to accurately track your viewing habits is the beginning of the slippery slope.
I don't think I have any channels I watch that would embarrass me either. But suppose some night I decide I want to rent a pay-per-view porn flick, and the next day when my wife is watching The View ads start flashing up advertising X-rated goodies?
In the days of over-the-air it was much more difficult for anyone to know what you were watching. Now it's not difficult at all.
I often read some of the posters' on the security forum and think they're too paranoid for reality. But I guess invasion of privacy is a matter of degree and I don't like the idea of my TV provider being able to use my viewing habits to customize advertising aimed at me. Or for any other purpose.
edit: If you have cable, FiOS, or satellite, your cable provider already knows your name and gender. They probably know your age too.

| There seems to be a "kink" in the story! Which story do we believe? Is it lack of technology or concerns about privacy? My uneducated guess "lack of technology". They don't give a rats behind about your privacy as long as they can make a buck.
