Google Conducting Set Top Android Tests With Dish'Target ads to individual households based on search and viewing data.' 11:44AM Tuesday Mar 09 2010 by Karl Bodetags: Video · business · hardware · cableAccording to the Wall Street Journal, Google continues to expand into, well, everything. The company is working in conjunction with Dish Network to test a Google-powered set top box based in part on the Android operating system. According to the Journal, Google's "trying to replicate the internet experience on TV, offering users the ability to search the Internet and explore web-based content via the device. The tests are currently ongoing in Google employee homes, and obviously bringing ads to your living room is Google's primary interest: Google's test, which began last year, is limited to a very small number of the company's employees and their families and could be discontinued at any time, said the people familiar with the matter. Viewers in the Google test, these people said, can search by typing queries, using a keyboard rather than a remote control. Google hopes to connect the service with its nascent TV ad-brokering business, allowing it to target ads to individual households based on search and viewing data. Cable won't much like Google encroaching into their dream territory of localized and behavioral cable TV advertising. The cable industry has been working hard on a unified advertising platform dubbed canoe, though they've struggled with the technology needed to make the idea of more nosy living room advertising a reality. The telcos too want in on the set top ad market, and it's unlikely that either cable or phone providers want to share their take of this market with their arch-nemesis Google if they don't have to. | Why Not? said by Karl Bode :Cable won't much like Google encroaching into their dream territory of localized and behavioral cable TV advertising. Why not? I believe most consumers choose cable or sat TV based on cost and content availability, not which company pushes ads on them. Who knows, maybe Google will solve the cable companies' issues...for a slice of the pie.

| Re: Why Not? Maybe they'd work together -- but the cable industry has 1, been working on their own version of this idea for several years and wants it to work, 2, is stocked with executives who hate Google's guts for their positions on network neutrality, white space broadband, competition, etc.
Perhaps if they can't get Canoe to work they'd turn to Google as a partner, but I doubt they want to if they don't have to.

And telco which has overlap with AT&T and Verizon. There's too much bad blood and generalized fear that Google tentacles know no bounds. Broadcast entities are also notorious for protecting turf and being slow to share it even when it would likely advance their own interests.
Karl, you said "and could be discontinued at any time, said the people familiar with the matter." Who might these people be? Smacks of a statement safe to utter due to wide criticism of (or whining about) Google's tendency to dev projects, float them onto a pool of users (often an excited public) then drop them as silently as the project appeared.
Sooo, are these people actually "familiar with the matter" or simply mouthing skepticism due to previous Google Labs behavior?
Thanks. | |

And the cable industry isn't exactly known for success or speed when they try to do things uniformly (see: Pivot, Tru2Way, etc.)Karl, you said "and could be discontinued at any time, said the people familiar with the matter." Fairly typical anonymous quote reporting -- I assume they're either Google or Dish employees simply saying that the project really could be scrapped if either side doesn't like the results or finds the technology doesn't work.

I assure you Google will eventually fail and its company will plunder in its net worth because they are spreading their forces way too thin and encroaching on seasoned companies territories such as Verizon, At&T, Microsoft, Time Warner etc.,

I strongly disagree with your assessment that Google does stray. Their model is consistent: search for and deploy systems that profile individual behaviors, merge that data with sets from other projects and profile consumption patterns. It's an astoundingly valuable data aggregation that improves with every diversification.
Even projects with high standalone social benefit like Google Earth and Street View generate contributing behavioral data. Assemble the myriad sources and it's downright frightening how comprehensive and durable a profile becomes.
All the research shows we humans simply do not vary behavior in the short or medium term and that the low percentage of us who are likely to alter behavior in the longterm are easily identifiable in advance. I'd kill to know how many PHD behavioral scientist Google has on staff and what algorithm designs they influence. Or dictate.

| Re: Google.... I personally don't think you need a PHD to figure out human nature. I do agree with your assessment about Googles ability to form comprehensive profiles though. The value of such information is priceless to business entities. My problem is just which business entities get it, and whom oversees that decision! -- BF69~~~Please stop suffocating gerbils! | |

| You change your mind in about five to seven years when this model collaspes. And it most likely will because when "people or entities do not learn from history they are doomed to repeat it." An old saying. This has failed before in history Google is no exception.
Sorry, you are mistaken in your analysis mate.

| This is great! Good for them! Nice to see a company where thinking is actually happening instead of just legal maneuvering to squeeze consumers.
While not a fan of advertising (thanks DVR!) I applaud Google for trying to reach their tentacles out for revenue wherever they can including unknown territory. I wish them well in crushing the status quo. They are definitely poised to be the next Microsoft (back in the days vs. IBM) delivering value while their competitors (Cable and Telcos) sit by too stupid to even understand how to adapt let along embracing change and steering it in a business positive direction as Apple has done with Itunes (excellent business model) from the days of Napster (not a revenue positive business model).
