4Chan claims they've been blocked, Verizon says no....
05:57PM Monday Feb 08 2010 by Karl Bode
tags: business · wireless · content · Verizon Wireless Broadband
(Updated with response from Verizon at bottom.) Last summer you might recall that 4Chan users collectively cried out that they'd been blocked by AT&T, and began firing their trademark digital barbs at the carrier's direction. As it turned out, the website had only been temporarily blocked as AT&T worked to resolve a distributed denial of service attack. Now in a post to their status blog, 4Chan says they've been blocked by Verizon Wireless. "We've received confirmation from Verizon's Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are 'explicitly blocked,'" says 4Chan founder Moot in a status update. "After investigating, we found that Verizon is dropping traffic to/from boards.4chan.org, only on port 80 (HTTP)," he says. Despite the proclamations sure to come, an intentional block of any website seems unlikely as the FCC sits crafting network neutrality rules; we've fired off an inquiry to Verizon to see what's causing the problem.

Update: Verizon offered us this statement about the 4Chan block:
Protecting Our Customers And Our Network

The most important thing we offer? Our network. When our network is attacked, or at risk of attack in a way that could harm our customers' ability to make and receive calls, or use wireless multimedia and data services, we jump to action.

Recently, Verizon Wireless security and external experts detected attacks from an IP address associated with the 4Chan family of web sites that was disruptive to our customers and our network. To protect both, we eliminated connectivity to the IP address. At no time was 4Chan itself blocked. Ongoing network security team monitoring has now determined there is no longer an immediate threat. Connectivity to those sites is being restored later today.

Typically, these attacks involve someone sending hundreds of thousands of messages to wireless devices to round up active customer addresses for follow-up activity including hacker attacks. These "sweeps" can jam our network and deliver unwanted electronic messages that also can drain customer devices’ battery life and slow their operation.

We take being the nation's most reliable wireless network seriously. Seriously enough to protect our customers and our network from malicious attacks, even if we get dinged in the blogosphere. It's easy to complain about "blocking" when your wireless data connection is stable, fast and reliable. But try connecting to the web from your Droid or Blackberry when attacks slow - and potentially block - use of our network all together.

We monitor against attacks and potential attacks to ensure the integrity of the Verizon Wireless network. Our customers expect nothing less.

But rogue sites like 4Chan that initiate, and often encourage, DDos attacks and other hacking attempts should be blocked. In fact, they should be shut down and prosecuted. All legally, of course. This is just another case where the laws have been insufficient to police the internet and shut down bad actors.

said by The Inquisitr :

****Moot has posted twice on the 4chan status blog seemingly confirming that the lack of access was a conscious decision by someone at Verizon:

Over the past 72 hours, we’ve been receiving reports from
Verizon Wireless customers having difficulty accessing the
image boards.

After investigating, we found that Verizon is dropping traffic
to/from boards.4chan.org, only on port 80 (HTTP). No other
subdomain/IP/port is affected, which leads us to believe this
block is intentional.

A call was placed to their support staff last night, and we
were told that the ticket would not be looked at until
Monday at the earliest, and: “You’ll need the customer to
call to request it be unblocked…”

If you’ve been affected by this block, please contact Verizon
Wireless customer support. The numbers we were given are:
“Verizon Wireless NRB: (866) 298-5373″ and “Verizon
Wireless DSO: (800) 770-1179″.

Note: Users with mobile browsers that proxy (BlackBerry,
Opera) won’t necessarily have issues accessing the boards.

****And the follow up:

After an hour and a half on the phone, we’ve received
confirmation from Verizon’s Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that
we are “explicitly blocked.”

If you’ve been affected by the block, please call Verizon NRB
at (866) 298-5373 to file a complaint.

EDIT: If NRB can’t help you, try Verizon Wireless Support at
(800) 922-0204.

****The Washington Post reports that if the site was deliberately blocked due to off-color content, Verizon may be violating FCC rules:

If true, the move would violate guidelines by the Federal Communications Commission that prohibit Internet service providers such as Verizon, AT&T and Comcast from shutting down Web sites for their subscribers. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is crafting controversial regulations that would make those principles stronger and allow the agency to punish companies that don’t treat all content equally on the Web.

****However, a series of tweets just posted on the account of a man who describes himself as the “Verizon Wireless PR Guy” rapidly back away from the suggestion that the 4chan block was intentional:

@jlist No 4Chan block, but protecting network for users always top priority.

Buby23 4Chan has green-light again. Never a block on 4Chan but some of its other sites were launching network attacks.

@mediagadfly Some 4Chan web sites potentially disruptive of Verizon network now have green-light. We are monitoring network for harm

If that’s the position they’re taking, I hope they’ll take the time to explain why a representative for Verizon seems to have indicated otherwise.

****Update: The PR rep above denies Verizon blocked 4chan for content:

Verizon doesn’t monitor wireless web connections for content, communication type or style. We will ward off attacks on our network.

I don't disagree with you, I just have a highly ingrained personal disdain for 4chan and specifically what occurs on that board that is somewhat affecting my typical impartial nature with regards to what is placed on the net. With that in mind, you'll understand my bias in this situation.

4Chan is no more rogue than any playground full of foul-mouthed 6th-graders. We don't shut down playgrounds just because some kids start giggling about anatomy or make up songs about teachers hitting with the ruler.

So let me get your thinking straight..ONLY ISPs that is the establishment has the right to censor or take action they believe is good for me whether I believe it is or not..ammirite? It is better to think of the users of 4 chan as an organic entity that will lash out against attack..whether you agree or not THIS WILL HAPPEN..it is just how they operate. We are tought young to stand up to bullies..this is just the digital version of that....

Comparison is rather flawed, Google doesn't advocate burning down someone's house. Can't say the same for 4-chan who has no qualms with taking things to real life.

There are plenty of message board communities that are moderated effectively so as to not allow this behavior. Huge difference between outright blocking and moderating.

I don't think you quite understand the volume of posts made on a minute by minute basis on 4chan.

* Total posts: 398,127,475
* Current users: 45,426
* Active content: 14 GB

How many message boards do you know of that have forty five THOUSAND currently active readers? And that's just in the past 10 minutes during the stats refresh. Just wait for the 400000000get! That number will go up x5 easily.

What few moderators that board does employ can't do much more than piss to put out the fire, but they DO take care of the really horrifying garbage fairly quickly.

My guess as to what happened:
Some script kiddie was running a botnet on a spoofed 4chan IP range. Verizon sees it coming across their network and put a halt to it toot sweet. The shitheads start crying CONSPIRACY!! and the wagons start circling. Seen it happen dozens of times, and it'll happen again.

**EDIT**

In the 3 minutes it took me to write this message, the post count increased to 398,137,810. A little over 10k posts in under 5 minutes? Wait until Friday, my man...

I say that is their duty, at least for the moderators, and I am saying this as a former mod, sysop, and admin of several sites. With that being said, I have checked out 4chan in the past. It is the most pointless site ever, but the mods seem to be doing their job. Grotesque content gets routinely posted, but the worst seems to go away quite quickly, on average. It's just their users are persistent idiots that are allowed to post anonymously and keep reposting as it keeps being taken down. Now if I was to look at whether the admins/sysops are doing an adequate job, I would say no. There is much that can be done on a technical level to contain the threat a board like 4chan can pose and it just isn't done. I respect their mods because they put up with a lot, but still try and do their jobs quickly enough. However, the admins/sysops need a good swift kick in the teeth.

DDoS and personal army requests are a permaban(IP address based) on 4chan, and the site does fall under freedom of speech(the first amendment to the US constitution), and the site is constantly policed by moderators and admins to remove posts that are against the rules, as well as all pics that are against the rules and/or illegal.

Wrong argument, please reread the 1st amendment to the US Constitution:

Correct, but most states have similar laws that apply both to them and local municipalities. In addition congress has the authority to regulate interstate and international commerce which the internet does fall under. Since most ISPs and every major ISP is a multi-state entity the regulation of these falls to congress and the federal government.

As such it is the federal governments place to say if an ISP has the right to block off content as ISPs are using public land and int he case of wireless networks, public airwaves all of which is regulated by federal, state and local governments. Denying them access would cause problems as major providers are already too big to fail, so for all practical purposes they are already part of the governing apparatus of this country.

they discovered the block was inappropriate and lifted it within hours of it happening. In those say 6 hours or so... the ATT ceo had been reported dead; all the articles indicating that he was a visionary who made ATT work. All the investors then were communicated this fact and the other facts of how they are going to lose ALOT of customers.

Guess what. The same thing will likely happen to verizon now. Except this time they've communicated that it's explicit and meant to happen.

This means that any investors or stock owners... will look at the last month for verizon's stock. See that it's been going down all month, Now they are going to go head to head with 4chan? Whose members are pretty much uninhibited in what they are willing to do. Verizon will likely be lucky if they only just cancel their services. Either way, it'll almost certainly mean verizon caves in and unblocks... or loses ALOT of customers.

Lose/Lose for verizon.

I think the number of people who cancel their Verizon account over them blocking 4chan would be quite low or nonexistent. The rest of what you are talking about..what I can understand...seems like an exaggeration. I can't imagine anyone at AT&T losing any sleep over what happened.

Much as I disapprove...

...of the antics of the 4Chan community, blocking them outright seems to be a bad idea. You (Verizon) don't go after one site (4Chan), you go after whomever is attacking your network (and no, I don't believe for a second the admins on 4Chan would be stupid enough to launch DDoS attacks on Verizon).

I say it's a bad idea because it's a slippery slope into blocking whomever you want for whatever contrived reason you can muster. Yes, it's a Wild West Saloon where everyone's high on glue, naked and pretty much destroying everything in sight with the care of a baby with a bazooka, but, this is America. Freedom of speech, even if irresponsible and disturbing, is the very first right we are all granted in the Bill of Rights. It doesn't matter what we want to say or where or how we want to say it - we all have the right to say it.

Do I like anything that goes on at 4Chan or any of the linked or subsidiary sites (like Encyclopedia Dramatica)? Absolutely not, but I'll defend their right to say it with every drop of blood I have.

Verizon's making a very big mistake by blocking them, and if it remains in place it's setting a very bad precedent. What's stopping them, if they keep this in place, from blocking a site they don't agree with (Consumerist or BBR, or perhaps something with a more political theme such as RedState)?

Abortion is murder, Reagan was a hero, Clinton was a sleazeball, Iraq is much better off without Saddam, and the telcos are not trustworthy with American tax dollars. There! I've managed to offend a significant portion of BBR!

I wonder...

In the at&t event, it was an automated system designed to stop DDoS attacks that shut down 4chan access, right? I wonder if it's the same thing again.

Re: I wonder...

Bad Guy 1 started syn flooding and ip spoofing as if he was 4chan.org.
ATT and other isps then acking back
4chan started getting lots of acks which didnt match up with syns. Their anti-ddos stuff handled it incorrectly and sent back lots of syns; instead of dropping.
The ATT network guys never checked to see if 4chan was 4chan or whatever. They just tracked a few packets and discovered they really were(at least most of them) coming from 4chan's ip.They just saw a syn flood coming from that ip. So they blocked that ip. They never really intended to block 4chan because of it's content. The network engineers did nothing wrong. So really u cant blame att.

If verizon is blocking 4chan because of content however... well im sure some other company will buy them out evetually when they are dead as a company.

Plausible, but we're both just guessing.

Come on

If you see what some people say about isps here and advocatr doing onthese boards. This site would be blocked by isps too. You cant block one site and not block another site for the same reason.

Bad business.

Although I wholeheartedly agree that what is posted on 4chan is a bunch of crap, and from what I hear often borders (or crosses that border) of what is legal....

.... I STRONGLY believe that ISP's should not be in the business of blocking any type of content for users.

At the very least an ISP should give you the CHOICE on their website, more or less like OpenDNS does.... giving the user a choice of completely unfiltered internet, and a variety of levels of blocking, from only moderate that blocks things like phishing sites, to extreme which blocks everything even slightly pornographic in nature.

In any case, users should get the CHOICE and not be forced in to what the ISP thinks is good for them.

Not the ISPs business

ISPs aren't the police.

They have no right to enforce laws unless told to do so by and agency that does enforce laws. So the FBI, RCMP or whatever flavor of Federales you happen to have in a given country.

Should the authorities decide to block it due to their interpretation of the law, then the ISP should either comply or appeal.

In a legal, transparent process.

What's going on here is neither legal or transparent, some may perceive 4Chan as being tasteless, illegal, or whatever, no charges have been brought up against it.

I hope Verizon gets the taste of "Frontier Justice" it seems to be avidly persuing.

Meh...

Oh no! A huge company pissed off bunch of kids posting on one website.

Seriously though I think ISPs should provide a dumb pipe and that's it. I never go to chan4 and if they were to disappear I wouldn't mind based on the stuff I read about them. However if Verizon did this to protect their own network due to malicious traffic I think that's just fine.

4chan /b/ can be either life or death of an ISP or (insert other) and are known to handle things not so nicely when they are pushed against a wall like this. I remember the night att put that block on there you would of though ww3 started. A user base that consist of Millions of angry 12 year olds who think LOLCats is funny and Posting CP is a cool thing. Yeah anon is the only thing on the internet I will not piss off.

Restored rather quickly.

At no time was 4Chan itself blocked. Ongoing network security team monitoring has now determined there is no longer an immediate threat. Connectivity to those sites is being restored later today.

Re: Restored rather quickly.

They had to cave since what they were doing was against FCC rules for blocking websites do to content, which is the first reason Verizon gave. And since they are trying to kill off Net Neutrality laws before they are written the couldn't be seen as being a censor or a bully.

Who's network is it?

If their security dept blocked access to/from some addresses for a security concern....that is their decision to make. If you don't agree with the management decisions made there are other carriers available..I'd rather a carrier try to be pro-active than suffer the negatives.

Bash the security guys for making a decision that impacts you in a way you actually notice for once...Nevermind all of the spam and other Bad Stuff they defend against that you don't notice until said protection fails.

I'm not a Verizon fanboi, nor do I have anything against 4chan aside from personal dislike, but even if this broke access to www.disney.com or DSLR, shit happens...If it has a customer facing impact, that wasn't intended and that is avoidable..... they'll address it.

I know, I know, if it was your network you would have fixed it already.

So I'm Verizon. Suddenly I hear DSLReports is badmouthing my network. We say "Oh right for security reasons we have to block them entirely."

or if Verizon wants to be more clever. Ip spoof dslreport's ip and start flooding or ddosing some people.

Hell we dont even need verizon to be involved. I can be an internet vigilant who hates a certain website. I do this attack. Then the ISP blocks that site. When realistically it had nothing to do with them.

Afterall this is what happened to ATT. Now Verizon is claiming the same thing. Which I dont doubt for a second as 4chan recently has been getting lots of malware garbage going on.

Sorry but you shouldnt be blocking websites which have legit traffic. Some spam website or whatever... sure block it. But 4chan isnt such a site.

I'm sorry, you must have missed my thread subject and most of my post. Due to the misunderstanding, it appears you misunderstand where the 4chan IP was blocked. It was blocked within Verizon's network, not 4chan's, by Verizon.

Everyone seems to have so much fear for a group of people merely bent on spewing all that is vile whilst masquerading under the pretense of "freedom of speech"...as a society we've become so politically sensitized into either being politically correct or outright minding our own business, the latter being marginally amiable with the former bearing consequences our minds have yet to comprehend.

All in all, yeah....award them their duly freedom of speech. But me personally and speaking in a language they can understand...

I would shoop da whoop on their (4Chan) behinds, and do roflcopters all over their servers if I had access to decent bandwidth...oh and would lmfao all day to it.
